Although civil cases in the District Court are governed by the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and the Rules of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, each judge has his or her own set of rules to manage their courtroom, which dictate, among other things, how the case will proceed and when and how motions will be heard. Once your case has been filed and assigned a judge, you may find out about the judge and his or her courtroom rules by clicking here to access the District Court’s website.
The Circuit Court of Cook County is one of the largest unified court systems in the world. It has more than 400 judges and accepts more than 1.2 million cases each year for filing. The Court is divided into ten divisions and six geographic districts. The Law Division handles civil litigation matters only. Once a lawsuit is filed, it is assigned a motion judge who will handle the case until it is ready for trial, at which time, the case will be re-assigned to a trial judge. Cases proceed in accordance with the Illinois Code of Civil Procedure, the Illinois Supreme Court Rules and the Rules of the Circuit Court of Cook County.
