Cook County is Illinois’ largest and most populous county with 5,240,700 residents and 946 square miles of land and 689 square miles of water. It shares the state’s beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline with Lake County and is the second most populous county in the United States after Los Angeles County in California. Nearly 41% of all Illinois residents live in Cook County, which includes over 130 incorporated municipalities, the largest of which is Chicago with close to 3 million people and approximately 54% of the population of Cook County. That part of the county outside Chicago’s city limits is divided into 30 townships, each of which includes various cities, towns and villages. Chicago, the third largest city in the United States, is the county seat and home to many famous attractions including the Art Institute of Chicago, Shedd Aquarium, Museum of Science and Industry and America’s tallest building, the Willis Tower, 1451 feet tall and 110 stories.

The United States District Court has 50 judges and magistrates, most of who handle civil as well as criminal matters. After a case is filed in the District Court, a judge and magistrate are assigned to handle it until it’s’ completion, either by settlement or trial. Although civil cases in the District Court are governed by the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and the Rules of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, each judge has his or her own set of rules to manage their courtroom, which dictate, among other things, how the case will proceed and when and how motions will be heard. The Circuit Court of Cook County is one of the largest unified court systems in the world. It has more than 400 judges and accepts more than 1.2 million cases each year for filing. The Court is divided into ten divisions and six geographic districts. The Law Division handles civil litigation matters only. Once a lawsuit is filed, it is assigned a motion judge who will handle the case until it is ready for trial, at which time, the case will be re-assigned to a trial judge. Cases proceed in accordance with the Illinois Code of Civil Procedure, the Illinois Supreme Court Rules and the Rules of the Circuit Court of Cook County.
